Science Night

OOBLECK

Doing community service at Los Medanos Elementary school on Thursday was such a great experience I even got to see my first grade teacher who is now the principle of the school. This was the first time I did something like this, I got to show and entertain so many children. When I arrived everyone was getting there table set everyone was so concentrated and in a hurry that you really couldn't talk to them. Once I got to my station Diana, Itsela and me started to set up, then Itsela had to leave but then Sergio came. We made our display oobleck then we started to fill up the Ziploc bags with corn starch so when the children got to the station it would be faster and they wouldn't have to wait for a long time. We only filled about 20 bags with corn starch we thought that was enough but no we were wrong. Showing the first 20 children how to make oobleck was very easy and it was calm. We took our time on each child and we were able to see their reaction once they got to play with the oobleck they made. The children seemed amazed to see that the same substance can be solid and liquid at the same time.

Diana, Sergio, and I were calm at first but once we had finished all of the Ziploc bags and more children came and in groups we started  to panic a little. We had to make the bags very quickly so the children wouldn't get bored and go without making their oobleck. So while we were making the bags for them we had them play with the display but more kids  would come. We were all over the place there were a bunch a boxes of cornstarch on the table because we need an easy access to them do we could quickly fill up new bags. We had to ask each other almost the whole night were we had each put the color of food coloring a child would want. But we got through all of these struggling moments. What motivated me to move quickly was seeing all the children coming to our table all excited from the other tables and I didn't want them to loose their excitement because we took long on making the Ziploc bags with corn starch.

Once the children got to play and make their batch of oobleck they were excited. As I said before they seemed amazed to see that it can be liquid and solid at the same time.  At first they were shy but once we started to talk to them they began to talk to us. Some thought that they were just making the oobleck but once they were told they took it home a smile appeared on their face. One of the parents that stood out to me was a Hispanic mom who took her son to our table he was shy so she sorta did more the talking but what made her stand out was what she told her son in Spanish pay attention so you can learn and so that one day you'll be like them and show other children. When I heard her say that it made me feel special and proud of myself and my group. Once I showed her son how to make oobleck and why it's amazing she asked what we used and she showed another mom who I guess was her friend. So once her child was done she left but her friend stayed with her daughter. Her daughter made one then later on came back to make another one, there were some children that did that.

Overall what I got out of this experience was that I learned that working under pressure is hard but you'll find a way through it like I did with my group. Also I learned that working together is important because doing thins by yourself is hard. Don't think you can can do everything by yourself you may need help from others. And to always be prepared with what your doing. I'm glad I chose Itsela, Diana, and Sergio to be my group members because they helped a lot. It was tiring but it was worth the experience.

H-Weezy Problem

The q² I was given was .17 which means that 17% of the population carry's the recessive trait. The population size was 1000.The steps to get q, p, p ², and 2pq are:

  1. Since we are given q² then we can find q and in order to do that you take the square root of .17 which gives you .41 so q=.41
  2. Now that we have q we can get p since p+q=1. So what you do next is you do q-1=p, so its .41-1=.59, p=.59
  3. Next your able to find p² by squaring p which is .59, so .59²=.35
  4. Next you can fin 2pq you're able to do this step before finding p² but I prefer to do after I find p². To find 2pq you do 2×.59×.41=.48;  2pq=.48
  5. You can check your work by using the Hardy-Weinberg equation which is                    p²+2pq+q²=1, you would plug in the numbers corresponding the variable and it has to equal 1 and if it doesn't then you did something wrong; .35+.48+.17=1
Now to find out what number of the population that are homozygous recessive individuals, homozygous dominant individuals, and heterozygous individuals you have to:
  1. We know that q² are the homozygous recessive individuals so we do 1000×17%(which is the percent of the population that are homozygous recessive individual) equals 170; so 170 people from the population of 1000 are homozygous recessive individuals.
  2. p² are the homozygous dominant individuals so you do the same as in step 1. You do 1000×35%=350; so 350 people in the population are homozygous dominant individuals.
  3. 2pq are the heterozygous individuals so then you do the same as in step 1 and 2. You do 1000×48%=480; so 480 people from the population of 1000 are heterozygous individuals
  4. You can check your work buy adding all the numbers of the people that have these three trait and it has to equal 1000 since that's the population we started with; 170+350+480=1000

Blackwrom Data

Based on the blackworm I have concluded that solution A is stimulant, solution B is depressant, and solution C is normal. I came to this conclusion by counting how many numbers lower than 20, then how many 20's, then 30's, then 40's and higher there from all 3 sloutions then putting the together to see the difference. Afetr I did that I circled all the low numbers compared to each solution and sloution B had 3 cirlces, sloution A 1 circle, and solution C had also 1 circle. So then I conluded that solution B had the lowest numbers so it had to be depressant then that solution A by having more higher numbers than solution C it would be stimulant and solution C having the average numbers would be the normal.

Ecology Selfies

This picture was hard to take because I don´t like spiders. It was a small spider so I tried my best to get as close as I could beacuse I didn´t want to scare it and make it go away or run towards me because that was my fear.

This picture was difficult to take because I wasnt able to get a good picture with a bird. The birds would get close but they would fly away when I would take out my phone. I had to take many pictures until I got a decent one where the bird was visible.

This picture was fun to take because there was a variety of fishes to choose from but these caught my eyes. They were so bright, colorful, small, and cute.
